CHERRIES boss Andoni Iraola labelled the end of season player of the season awards as “very English”, sharing how the vote was “new” to him.

Last week voting for the Micky Cave/Daily Echo AFC Bournemouth player of the year award opened, running until 12pm Friday.

In Spain such votes are uncommon, with Iraola stating that the phenomenon was quite literally foreign to him.

He told the Daily Echo: “This is very English!

“We don't have these things. No, this is very English.

“We don't have this player of the year. This is new.

“If we had it, I didn't win it, I guarantee you!

“But I don't remember even any other teammate winning this player of the year and these things.

“So it's I think it's very, very English.”

Despite a lack of recognition via end of season awards, Iraola was a firm fan favourite during his time at Athletic Club.

And the Basque boss believes it is nice for the players to receive plaudits from the fans.

“It’s nice at the end of the season,” Iraola continued.

“I think it's a way of giving the recognition to players that have been really consistent all season and I don't know who will win it, but I think it's a good thing.”
