POOLE'S Lantern Parade has been cancelled due to bad weather.

The parade was due to take place tonight in Poole town centre.

The popular annual event sees local schools and scout groups parade through the streets of Poole with handmade lanterns.

Participants were due to leave Falkland Square at 6pm with the parade making its way to the Guildhall for carols and mince pies.

Poole Town Centre said on Twitter this morning: "Unfortunately due to weather reports from the Met Office, we have had to make the decision to cancel tonight's parade.

"The weather is set to be gale force winds with showers on and off all day. The safety of everyone taking part has to come first."

Heavy rain is expected up until 2pm with more heavy downpours predicted again at 8pm.
